Edward William Godwin (attr.)
Coffee table, ca. 1885
Ebonised and gilded wood
h. 73 cm - w. 38 cm - d. 38 cm
PROVENANCE : British art market, 2019
SIMILAR PIECES : Only three tables of this design are known to date. Another ebonised example in a private collection and a mahogany example, formerly in the collection of the late John Schaeffer, with H. Blairman and Sons, London.
LITERATURE : Susan Weber Soros, The Secular Furniture of E.W. Godwin, New Haven & London, 1999, no. 222.
NOTE : Soros notes that while there is no known drawing for this table, many of its features ‘link to the work of Godwin. The elegantly splayed legs, the valanced apron under the middle shelf, the baluster-turned supports, and the latticework side panels areal features found in many of Godwin’s furniture designs…’.
