PROVENANCE : French art market, Paris, late 1990's - Collection of Nicole Mostini, Paris, ca. 2000 - Collection of Mark Tyson, Media, PA, acquired directly from the previous owner 2002-2018.

SIMILAR PIECES : This gourd is a rare and famous shape in Doat's production. Very few other examples are recorded. One of them, dated 1907, sold at Drouot Estimations, Hôtel Drouot, 30th April 2004, lot 123.

NOTE : In 1909, when Doat moved to University City, MO, this shape was one which he continued to work on by creating different types of glazes. One of those 'UC' pieces was recently given by Robert A. Ellison to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and another is in the collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum, acquired directly from Doat in 1911.
