PROVENANCE : French art market, ca. 1990's - Collection of Lillian Hoffmann, New York, until 2014 - Rago Arts Auction, 1st March 2014, lot 31 - American private collection, acquired at the above sale, until January 2019.
SIMILAR PIECES : An almost identical vase was brought by Doat to University City, MO in 1909, and subsequently sold to the City Art Museum of Saint Louis in December 1911. The price was $11.75. The piece was deaccessioned by the museum on 11th May 1945.
EXHIBITED : A gourd of similar shape, with the same pentagonal neck and decorated with pearls, but with a different 'flammé' pattern, was exhibited at the 1902 Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts at the Grand Palais in Paris.
